Translation in the Arabic Media and the Zunburi Problem

Ali Darwish
17 October 2004

Abstract

This article sheds the light on several serious endemic translation problems in the Arabic media today stemming from absolute literalism, "metaphor creep", faulty transfer, semantic-pragmatic dissonance, and nonalignment of rhetorical techniques. The zunburi [wasp] problem is an old Arabic grammatical problem, akin to the problem of "between you and I/between you and me" in English,  used in the article to set the scene for the discussion of similar yet more serious translation-induced language errors in Arabic.
